I need to record some investments that were not paid by cash or note.
They are basically promotional distributions of stock. I plan to debit
the investment account, what account do I credit?

Did you receive them? - Free stock no cost
Will you have to pay for them at any stage? - Given credit, creditors
account
Need more info.

U need not account ur such reciepts as ur total inverstment value will
be same the day u sell out ur value of investment shall be determined
likely. Say u have 100 shares of total value of 2000 then u get 40
bonus so ur per share value at the time of sale shall be determined by
2000/40* no of shares sold.

Else u can credit the bonus shares recieved in income and debit the
investments. The income to be determined while ur tax calculations. But
first option is the best.
