Accounting Software Need for a Construction Company

Hi,

I was looking for a perfect accounting software for my company need. By
boss was very concious about the price of the software and the its
features. I spend couple of hours and dig out three good choices but I
am not sure about the cutomers feedback about it.

The three applications are offered by 1. Foundation software, 2.
Industry Specific Software and 3. Dexter.

I will highly appreciate if you can comments about it. I have uploaded

Howdy,

Accounting software is not rocket science. However, there is a bunch of
sloppy data base designs out there at outrageous prices. QuickBooks is one
of them. If the software has to flounder around to find all the pieces to
assemble for reports, you can expect poor performance and difficult to
repair data errors.

One of the first things you want to look for is a data base that you can
open with at least one popular spread sheet program. You absolutely do not
want your data stored in a proprietary data base. Your best bet is Excel
compatible. Next would be Access.

If the data base is not laid out similar to doing accounting on paper, look
elsewhere. If you can't look at the data base structure, you've got the
wrong program.

We have used Peachtree for years in our construction business. We have
the complete version with job costing. I see that they have one that
has come out specifically for contractors, and when we upgrade later
this year (hopefully), I am going to look at switching over to that
one. I'm not real crazy about some of the features in Peachtree's job
costing - I would that it be a bit more customizeable with the phases
and cost codes, but we've managed to work around the quirks for our
needs.

Didn't think about it before, but it might help to know how big your
operation is. How detailed do you need job costing to be? Peachtree
does have timecard posting - so employee time can be billed by the hour
to specific jobs and phases or codes within those jobs - ie J1919,0100,
Demolition. :)

Reports can be detailed or sumarized.

Expense tickets can be created for items purchased and things like #
miles used on company truck then picked up when preparing a customer
invoice and applied.

Might be worth looking at when you're making your decision.
